Hobby Project 2012/2013 – Black Templars

Now that the Independent Characters' 2011/2012 Hobby Challenge is over, it's time to look towards my project for 2012/2013. It's looking like they won't be doing another army project for this year - which makes sense, as expecting listeners to crank out a new army every year would be a bit much - but I have another army waiting in the wings for such a project. Since I'm ready to go now, in May I'll be kicking off my Black Templar army. My goal - a 2000-point army completed by March 31, 2013. I have pretty much everything purchased and ready to start assembling, so I'll be spending the next two weeks making sure my hobby space is stocked and ready, and then I'll be off to the races!

Here's the list that I'm looking at right now:

HQ: Marshal (136 pts)
1 Marshal (Terminator Honors; Frag Grenades; Lightning Claw x1; Storm Shield x1)

HQ: Master of Sanctity (127 pts)

HQ: Emperor's Champion (140 pts)
1 Emperor's Champion (Accept Any Challenge, No Matter the Odds)

Elite: Venerable Dreadnought (166 pts)
1 Venerable Dreadnought (Searchlight; Venerable; Skill: Tank Hunter; Twin-Linked Lascannon; Missile Launcher)

Elite: Dreadnought (148 pts)
1 Dreadnought (Smoke Launchers; Multi-melta)
1 Drop Pod

Elite: Sword Brethren Terminator Assault Squad (523 pts)
1 Sword Brethren Terminator Assault Squad (Furious Charge)
3 Terminator with Lightning Claws
3 Terminator with Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield
1 Land Raider Crusader

Troops: Crusader Squad (213 pts)
1 Crusader Squad (Squad with Frag Grenades)
4 Initiate with Bolt Pistol and CCW
1 Initiate with Meltagun
1 Initiate with Bolt Pistol & Power Fist
3 Neophyte with Bolt Pistol & CCW
1 Rhino (Smoke Launchers)

Troops: Crusader Squad 213 pts)
1 Crusader Squad (Squad with Frag Grenades)
4 Initiate with Bolt Pistol and CCW
1 Initiate with Meltagun
1 Initiate with Bolt Pistol & Power Fist
3 Neophyte with Bolt Pistol & CCW
1 Rhino (Smoke Launchers)

Troops: Crusader Squad (194 pts)
1 Crusader Squad
3 Initiate with Bolter
1 Initiate with Plasmagun
1 Initiate with Lascannon
1 Razorback (Smoke Launchers; Twin-Linked Lascannon)

Fast Attack: Land Speeder Squadron (70 pts)
1 Land Speeder Typhoon (Typhoon Missile Launcher)

Fast Attack: Land Speeder Squadron (70 pts)
1 Land Speeder Typhoon (Typhoon Missile Launcher)

I'm going to be joined in the challenge by my podcasting co-hosts Dennis, who will be painting his Dark Eldar, and Richard, who will be painting Tyranids. They already have all their models assembled, and Dennis's are primed as well, so I'm starting a bit on the back foot. Of course, my army's primer is going to be their main color, so that gives me a slight advantage on painting speed - not that it's necessarily a race. I do have a few models already assembled, though - I went ahead and got my Assault Terminators and Emperor's Champ ready.

This will be my first Imperial army, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out. It'll be nice to work with power armor that isn't covered in spikes...

Looks solid. Just a few comments from a veteran Templars player:

-The Ven Dread tank hunter looks pretty on paper, and it’s a great modeling opportunity, but is all too often neutralized by suppression fire. Especially with the prevalence of cheaper Rifleman/Psyfleman dreads in others codices. The Melta dread in the pod tends to be much more effective. If Forgeworld is allowed where you play then I’d suggest the Siege Dreadnought with Multi-Melta. Same price as comparably equipped dread (I think a bit cheaper than Templar dreads actually) but it comes with the siege drill that grants an extra D6 against stationary vehicles/defenses and auto hvy. flamer hits on passengers. If you are going to proceed with the tank hunter Ven Dread you may want to consider just staying with the Power Fist rather than the Missile Launcher. The extra shot is nice, but it sucks when you have to charge into combat (because of your AAC Vow) and get tarpitted!

-Templar Rhinos: They’re more expensive than C:SM equivalent. But Extra Armor upgrades are cheaper. Try to spring for the upgrade if you can. Not getting stunned while you’re trying to deliver your payload is essential. Plus it makes the Rhino an only acceptable fraction more expensive than it’s regular Marine counterpart.

-Typhoon Land Speeders are worth their weight in gold! Max them out if you can! Plus it gives you the chance to hum ‘Flight Of The Valkyries’ as your flitting about with them. :)
“I love the smell of charred bugs in the morning! It smells like…victory!”

    Good luck Crusader!

Good suggestions; considering that the Missile Launcher and Extra Armor on two Rhinos are the same cost, that allows me to change the list without any net change in points. :) Only tricky part now will be modeling the Extra Armor while making it removable.

Nothing a few sets of rare earth magnets sunk into the hull can’t rectify. I saw some cool CAD templates for cutting out plasticard extra armor posted on the Green Stuff Industries blog recently. Here’s the link:

Nice quick way to get some extra armor plates perfectly fit for your Rhino chassis.

    I’m glad my advice helped!

Nice to see another Black Templars player entering the fold.  The progress is looking good so far. If you have any questions about the army, feel free to toss me an email.  :)
