Very true; it's easy to fall prey to any of these traps, even when the goal is just to table your opponent.

Very enjoyable post, glad I clicked the link in the Top Ten. It's perhaps worth noting that the same emotions can be troublesome in Annihilation, although they make you chase a particular unit to the exclusion of easier targets, rather than abandon an Objective. :)

That's an aspect I hadn't thought about - losing track of the mission because you enjoy killing things too much. I think it would fall under Pride, but only somewhat. Good point about pickup v. tournament games; when the stakes are higher, the lessons are definitely more painful and leave a deeper impression.

Glad you enjoyed reading it!

Part of the "Pride" emotion for me is just wanting to wipe out the enemy (maybe is should be "Stupidity" instead of "Pride" in my case). It's not that I'm over-confident/under-estimating... It's that I really enjoy making my opponent take models off the board. I can think of a few games readily that I've lost because I left an objective to kill a unit that had no impact on me (and kill him I did). I've found that playing in leagues and tournaments a bit more is helping since loses in those hurt more than a friendly pickup game, but this is something I'm still working on getting better about.

Interesting read though, definitely food for though.
