DIY Sniper Drone Repair

DIY Sniper Drone Repair

This week I won an auction for a bits lot that included a spare set of Broadside metal bits (minus the back jet covers) and a full Sniper Drone team. Two of the snipers were complete, save for the top antenna, but one of the drones was missing a key bit:

Shy one fin.

Shy one fin.

Unfortunately, it's rather hard to get a single left-hand Sniper Drone fin, so my options were limited. I could either run a crippled drone, buy another drone set to cannibalize (and have the same problem over again), run fewer drones... or I could rebuild the drone myself. Fortunately, along with the metal bits came some plastic bits, including a set of sensor spines, a spare battlesuit burst cannon, and a fusion blaster. I looked at the shapes, and this gave me an idea. I dug through my bits and spare sprues, and got out a matching set of pieces.

Works In Progress

wip_collageHere's what I have on my current painting to-do list:

  • My Pathfinders. I have a unit of 8, with 6 of them roughly half-done. Beyond that, I have a Devilfish that's maybe two-thirds complete; it's just about at the detail painting stage.
  • My tanks. I have 3 Hammerheads halfway based with the spray gun. I need to get the bottoms done, and then I can move them into more detailed work. Beyond that, I also have a Sky Ray that needs the spray treatment, but that'll most likely require a new can of propellant. I may spray my two Piranhas at the same time.
  • My Broadsides. I have two Broadsides assembled and ready for priming. They're at the bottom of the list, though; I just won an auction for another set of the metal Broadside bits, and since I have 6 spare Crisis Suits still on the sprue (thank you, Rapid Insertion Force box), I can put together a third Broadside before I break out the primer.

After that, there's eight more Fire Warriors, a trio of Deathrain suits, two more monat suits, the aforementioned Piranhas, and a dozen Kroot. Once those are done, everything I have assembled will finally be painted... just in time to assemble more things. At this point, I'm tempted to adopt a point-based tracking system (similar to the one used by Ron from From The Warp, who borrowed it from LonePilgrim) just to keep myself accountable.

Citadel Spray Gun – First Impressions

For Christmas last year, I received a Citadel Spray Gun. I've been meaning to use it for a while, but I finally got around to giving it a spin this evening. I had three primed Hammerheads and a new pot of Knarloc Green Foundation for their base coat. I broke out the spray gun and propellant, mixed up the paint/water blend as instructed in the manual (and on the paint jar), and went to town. I have to say, I'm pleased with the results:

One Hammerhead, (mostly) basecoated with the Citadel Spray Gun.

The gun was easy to use, especially for someone like myself who has never worked with an airbrush before. There's not a lot of fine control, although between the propellant valve and the paint cap there's just enough adjustability to control the intensity of the spray. There was very little overspray (which always makes my wife happy; she hates seeing paint on the concrete), and the coverage was smooth and consistent. Having the speed and coverage of a spray can combined with the drying speed and lack of fumes of water-based acrylic paint makes me very happy. I still need to spray the bottoms of the hulls and turrets, as well as the inside faces of the engine nacelles, but that should go quickly enough.

My only concern about continuing to use the spray gun is the cost of propellant. Roughly one-third to half of a can was used up in getting three tanks mostly done. At most, I'm likely to get the undersides of these vehicles done, and then possibly a Piranha or two painted before I run out. At $8 a can, I'm glad that I don't have too many more vehicles to paint this way. On the other hand, I don't know if I would use the gun so much as to warrant the cost of an air compressor-powered solution (and apparently, you can hook up the Citadel sprayer to an air compressor with an adapter). Even with the price of propellant, though, I'd still give the spray gun a solid thumbs-up. For an airbrush amateur like myself, it's a welcome addition to my painting toolkit.

Tau Crisis Suits

Crisis Suit Commander Back in February, I was working on the base for my crisis suit commander. I finished the mini in March, but I'm just now getting around to taking photos of it, along with my other painted crisis suits. I'm still working on my photography setup, mostly due to having an old 2-megapixel camera that takes terrible photos, so this time around I borrowed a friend's camera. I'm very happy with how the pictures turned out. The lighting wasn't completely ideal - the yellowish tint on some of the crisis suits is due to the overhead light - but the pictures are still the sharpest, cleanest pictures I have yet.
