Tau Crisis Suits

Crisis Suit Commander Back in February, I was working on the base for my crisis suit commander. I finished the mini in March, but I’m just now getting around to taking photos of it, along with my other painted crisis suits. I’m still working on my photography setup, mostly due to having an old 2-megapixel camera that takes terrible photos, so this time around I borrowed a friend’s camera. I’m very happy with how the pictures turned out. The lighting wasn’t completely ideal – the yellowish tint on some of the crisis suits is due to the overhead light – but the pictures are still the sharpest, cleanest pictures I have yet.

First, my command suit:

The unfortunate Ultramarine on the base is made from some old, old Second Edition bits I had around. All there is to him is a backpack, an arm, a shoulder pad, and his bolter; that’s why he’s buried in rubble. I have a few identical bits from that sprue remaining, so he may not be the last of his kind to show up on one of my bases. The hardest part of getting this figure painted was all the red; I hadn’t yet tried the Citadel Foundation paints, and the Vallejo Game Color reds I have do not provide good coverage. The next time I use this much red, you can bet there’s going to be a coat of Mechrite Red used.

Next up, my crisis suit squad:

You may notice that these suits are a lot less red than the commander. That’s because I’m going with a Vior’la sept cadre – one that I could possibly spin off into a Farsight cadre if I choose – so I want the usage of the sept color to correspond to a particular unit’s level of experience. The more blooded they are, the more Vior’la red their gear is. I will say that my next commander suit won’t use quite that much red, but I’m still happy with the results.

My painting project for July is to finish up my unit of Pathfinders. I have most of the work done on their clothing; next up is to get their armor base-coated, and then they’ll be ready for detail work.
