Change you can believe in…
Posted by NockerGeek in Warhammer 40K on July 30, 2009

On the Chaos side of things, I think I finally have a plan of where I want to go with my army and what my next steps are. Since I had Ahriman and a Chaos Sorcerer, I was leaning heavily towards a Tzeentch/Thousand Sons army, but I decided to pull things back a bit. I didn’t want to necessarily go straight-up Black Legion/Chaos Undivided either, so I’ve decided to go down the middle road with a warband that skews strongly towards Tzeentch, but isn’t exclusively tied to the Lord of Sorcery. To that end, my new Chaos warband is the Void Adepts, with colors as seen above. I’ll eventually get some Thousand Sons to integrate into the force, but for now I can actually build a 1000-point army with what I have (well, mostly). Here’s the list I’ve put together:
HQ: Chaos Sorcerer w/Mark of Tzeentch, Personal Icon, Warptime, Wind of Chaos – 190 pts
Elite: 6 Terminators, w/ 1 Chainfist, 1 Lightning Claw, 1 Power Fist, 3 Power Weapons, 1 Combi-flamer, 1 Combi-melta, 1 Reaper Autocannon, Icon of Tzeentch – 285 pts
Elite: Dreadnought w/ Plasma Cannon, Dreadnought CCW, Twin-linked Bolter – 105 pts
Troop: 9 Chaos Space Marines w/ 2 Meltaguns, Icon of Chaos Glory; 1 Aspiring Champion w/Power Fist – 220 pts
Troop: 9 Chaos Space Marines w/ 2 Flamers, Icon of Chaos Glory; 1 Aspiring Champion w/ Power Sword – 200 pts
It’s not perfect – I have no Rhinos yet, and I’m actually 14 marines short of having what I need for this list, but I may have a shot at getting a whole pile of unassembled Chaos Space Marines for a decent price, so that shouldn’t be an problem. Not counting the marines, I could actually get this rest of this force stripped, re-assembled, and primed within a week. I look forward to trying it out.
Weekend Progress
Posted by NockerGeek in General on July 27, 2009
It was a somewhat busy weekend, but I still managed to get in some painting and assembling done. Four of my eight Pathfinders now have basecoated armor, and I hope to get the other four done tonight or tomorrow. After that, it’s on to detailing, and then I can finish up their Devilfish. I may not make it before the end of the month, but I think I can wrap them up by the end of the first week in August. After that, I think it’s on to painting a Hammerhead. I have all three basecoated, so finishing one up should be a relatively easy task. If I can get that done, then I’ll have the following painted:
1 Commander Crisis Suit
3 Fireknife Crisis Suits
3 Stealth Suits w/ 2 Marker Drones
24 Fire Warriors
6 Gun Drones
1 Devilfish
8 Pathfinders
1 Hammerhead
Not counting upgrades, that’s roughly 940 points of models. Being able to field a completely-painted 1000 point army will be a nice milestone to hit this summer.
Assembly-wise, I got my Chaos Dreadnought taken apart in order to strip the paint from it, and I got my unpainted metal Chaos Terminators off of their old 2nd-Edition slottabases and onto new 40mm bases. The one with the Reaper Autocannon was probably the hardest to get glued, just because the gun unbalanced him, causing him to tip forward. Fun fact: a Fire Warrior is just the right height for holding up the tip of a Reaper Autocannon and keeping its holder steady.
Modeling Tip – Micro Files
Posted by NockerGeek in Modeling on July 23, 2009
If you work on miniatures at all, you really owe it to yourself to get a good set of files. I own a set of Gale Force 9 diamond micro files, and they’re easily one of the best tools in my toolbox. They’re small, but surprisingly tough. The diamond coating insures that the files will work just as well on metal miniatures as on plastic ones (although plastic does require a lighter touch). Also, they come in a variety of shapes – flat, round, curved, square, and triangular – for dealing with a variety of surfaces and jobs. Utility-wise, they come in very handy at multiple tasks. With mine, I’ve:
- cleaned up flash and mold lines
- filed holes larger or pegs smaller to provide a better fit (particularly useful with plastic flight bases, which never seem to be sized properly)
- scored/roughened metal surfaces to help glue adhere better
- filing off old, stubborn super glue from older minatures
- added grooves and depressions to a bit to make it join with a different part
Of course, a good tool requires good care. Fortunately, these are relatively easy to take care of. I keep them in their plastic sheath when not in use, and after using them I run them lightly between my thumb and forefinger to clean off any material hiding in the filing surface. By keeping them clean and dry, you can greatly extend the life of your files.
There are also sets of larger files available, but for miniature work I prefer the smaller, more delicate micro files. They’re a good set of precision tools, and not badly priced for the amount of work you’ll get out of them.
My precious… my birthday present…
Posted by NockerGeek in General on July 19, 2009
So another birthday has come and gone, and my friends spoiled me like crazy. Just the 40K-related haul was amazing. My friends Dan and Tim got me a copy of Dawn of War II, which has already provided me with a few hours of entertainment. Kat and Jon got me a gift certificate to my local gaming store, which will be put to good use, I’m sure. However, the pièce de résistance has to be the gift from my friend Richard, our local Ork player and kit-basher extraordinaire. (Seriously, I need to get pictures of the various pieces he’s been making, including a homemade Wazdakka that is just fantastic). A month or so ago, he won an auction at our local store for a massive collection of old-school 40K material, including a Second Edition boxed set, various codexes, a Rogue Trader rulebook (!), and a considerable cache of Second Edition-era Chaos models. Well, it’s no secret in our local group that I’ve been pondering Chaos as a second army, so I’d told Richard that I’d be interested in buying some or all of the Chaos figs off of him.
Fast forward to last night, at my birthday gathering, and Richard hands me three boxes, each progressively smaller than the first. I unwrap the first one, and it’s a Black Reach box… but inside is most of the Chaos figs that he’d won. Plague Marines, Khorne Berzerkers, Chaos Terminators, and so on. I open the second box, and inside is an old Chaos Dreadnought – so old, it has a spare Thunder Hammer close combat arm. And then, the third, smallest box. The other two boxes I’d vaguely recognized, but this one was new. Unwrapping it revealed a Tupperware container full of bubble wrap, and inside the bubble wrap was this:
My terrible camera does not do these miniatures justice. They look fantastic. This was the real present, apparently, and everyone knew about it but me. I was rendered damn near speechless.
I put together an inventory of what was in all those boxes, and I have to say that I did not make out poorly. No, not poorly at all:
5 Plague Marines
1 Plague Marine w/ Plasma Gun
1 Plague Marine Aspiring Champion w/ Plasma Pistol
5 Khorne Berzerkers
1 Khorne Berzerker Skull Champion
1 Chaos Terminator w/ Combi-flamer
1 Chaos Terminator w/ Chain Fist
1 Chaos Terminator w/ Reaper Autocannon
1 Chaos Terminator w/ Combi-melta and Lightning Claw
1 Chaos Terminator w/ Twin-linked Bolter
1 Chaos Terminator w/ Twin-linked Bolter and Lightning Claw
4 Chaos Space Marines
1 Chaos Space Marine w/ Flamer
1 Chaos Space Marine w/ Missile Launcher
1 Chaos Space Marine Aspiring Champion w/ Power Claw
1 Chaos Sorcerer
1 Chaos Dreadnought (w/ arms for Heavy Bolters, Plasma Cannon, or Autocannons)
1 Ahriman
1 Fabius Bile
Most of it’s either unpainted, or badly in need of stripping and repainting, and there are loose arms and backpacks and trophy racks, but that’s okay. That just leaves more room for customization and reworking later. It’s enough to make a legal army, although perhaps not the most well-balanced one, and gives me some very interesting options.
But anyway, the point is… I have far better friends than I deserve. Thank you so much guys, for everything – and the gifts, too!

Working on miniatures has come to a screeching halt as a nasty summer cold has settled into my sinuses and lungs, courtesy of my daughter, who got it from one of her playmates, who I think got it directly from the Great Lord of Decay himself.
Fortunately, I should be back on my feet in time for Saturday, when there’s going to be some serious 40k playing at my birthday gathering. (My birthday’s actually today, but Saturday is a better time to get everyone together). I’m also hoping to finish up spraying my Hammerheads before then. Until then, though, I’ll continue to feel like death warmed over until I get better.
